What is video conferencing?

This is one of the newer communication tools. Its popularity has grown with increased speeds of the Internet becoming available.

Each person in the video conference call has access to a video camera and microphone that can transmit both moving images and sound across the internet. The NSW Department uses two methods of video conference:

Particularly with the Polycom system in a one on one video conference, it can feel like being in the same room.

How is video conferencing used?

Video conferencing can be used for one-on-one conferences or 100+ conferences. In the former there are two individual camera points being used. In the latter each individual or group meets in a virtual conference room. With Adobe Connect, everyone meets in a virtual room no matter the size of the group.

In a one-on-one conference the other person will always be on the screen. In the case of larger conferences the person speaking will be the one seen on the screen.

Most video conferencing tools use microphones and voice over the Internet protocols (VoIP) for the audio. However, some use a teleconference with video pictures from the camera. Open source (free) video conferencing tools are currently being developed.
